A SMALL CHANGE AN EXPERIMENT IN CAUSE & WONDER Behind the rules

A SMALL INTERVENTION. ANOTHER UNIVERSE.

How much can
one small intervention change?

01 / ATTRACTION

Nothingmoves

Hold “alone”. Watch what it pulls toward itself. Keyboard: hold Space or Enter.

A little pull changes a path. Repeat it, and a field begins to find its shape.

Hold the gravity control. Matter accelerates inward. Release it, and the energy you gathered moves through the field. The longer you hold, the further it travels.

I. RELATIONSHIPS CREATE FORM.

02 / INTERFERENCE

Between us,
a new meaning.

Two voices. Still apart.

Two voices occupy the same space. Bring them into agreement to uncover what neither says alone.

Move the frequency toward the midpoint. The sentence and the field answer the same control.

See what remains
II. THE WHOLE IS A NEW THING.

03 / MEMORY

Your actions.
Still here.

The page is waiting for your first intervention.

Every intervention leaves a trace. These are yours, in the order you made them.

Keep this moment to add its phase to your print. Each trace changes the final knot; its shape carries up to twelve of your most recent decisions.

    III. REPETITION LEAVES A TRACE.

    04 / A TEMPORARY ORDER

    This one
    is yours.

An untouched field. Make an intervention to leave your signature.

An original procedural artwork. Yours to keep.

    IV. COMPLEXITY BEGINS SIMPLY.

    THE COLOPHON

    Wonder has
    a working.

This is a small study of emergence: the idea that interactions between simple parts can produce surprising collective patterns.

    The mathematics

The opening is a seeded accretion field. Holding applies a softened inverse-square attraction toward its centre; releasing adds outward velocity. Damped springs bring displaced particles back toward their evolving guide positions. This is a designed particle system, not an astrophysical simulation.

Interference adds two sine waves. Memory uses time-offset contours; its gathering signal reshapes those points onto a sphere. The interactive words are native HTML, coupled to the same charge and frequency as the field. Ordered action records contribute a deterministic fingerprint to the final knot. The final study gathers the material into a seeded toroidal knot. The camera changes continuously between studies.

    The material

Every point of light is generated in your browser. Thousands of particles retain position and velocity while a custom WebGL renderer gives them perspective, luminous cores, and depth. There is no stock footage, tracking, or camera input. Optional sound is synthesised locally after you turn it on.

    The foundation: f(css)

Semantic HTML, explicit state, and a small vocabulary of relationships. f(css) supplies the underlying layout and control system. This site owns its art direction and interactive behaviour. A lawful foundation; room for human taste.

Made for different ways of visiting

Use the chapter links to move freely. Every control works with a keyboard or touch. Pause movement at any time. Your reduced-motion preference is respected automatically. Without WebGL, the complete essay remains available with a static illustration.

    Keep a composition

The seed, attraction, and frequency are included in a composition link. They reproduce the same still artwork across visits. The link also preserves up to twelve recent interventions. Their ordered fingerprint alters the final geometry, alongside attraction, frequency and seed. The print includes your action history. Live particle velocity is transient; the print uses a fixed camera and moment.
